Review of “CHIMPANZEE” Disneynature by Richard Brock

It all depends on whether you like names given to your animals.

Way back, Hugo van Lawick made a ground-breaking film in Tanzania about a family of African wild dogs (The Wild Dogs of Africa). It featured a “character” called Solo but the new idea came a little unstuck when other named members of the pack, like “Torn Ear” or “Bent Tail” suddenly weren’t torn or bent. Most of the audience probably didn’t notice then, but they probably would today.

Subsequently Jane Goodall made her name, and those of lots of chimps, at Gombe. She had been married to Hugo von Lawick, and the chimps “personalised” stories advanced the style and her films were very popular and, as it turned out, scientifically important. The lives of the individual chimps continue to be monitored by a devoted team, though their Gombe home is now confined to a smaller area as the inevitable African people pressure increases in that part of Tanzania.

Fast forward, in evolution, with those chimps, now with their own film crews, investigating the private lives of the human equivalent. The BBC crew already have names, perhaps “Torn Ear”, but I’m not sure about “Bent Tail”. Tom, Dick and Harry, yes, and even a David, as seen filming with my good friend, sound recordist Dickie Bird (really).

Now we have a new “improved” (?) version from Disneynature. As I say, it all depends on whether you like humanised animals. Or not.

Chimpanzee was realeased on the 20th of April 2012 (Earth Day) in the US and will be released in UK cinemas on the 3rd of May 2013. Find out more here: www.disney.co.uk/disneynature/films/chimpanzee

Research and Production for Wildlife Documentaries :: 11-13 Jan 2013

Research and production are essential elements of the wildlife film industry but the activities involved and techniques required are not always obvious. This course combines presentations from experienced researchers and producers, who can guide you through the pitfalls and teach you the tricks of the trade, with practical work and examples from real productions. Working as a wildlife researcher or production assistant is often the first step in the wildlife film-making industry but getting a job can be hard. This course will give you a thorough grounding to all the skills required and be a valuable addition to your CV. If you are planning on 'going on your own' as a researcher/producer the information gained from this course will be invaluable. The skills learned are applicable to team members or solo film-makers. The course is taught by Caroline Brett, who is a highly experienced and award-winning producer/director, Alan Miller, an accomplished director, writer and editor, and Sarah Whalley, an experienced natural history researcher.

Places are still availale for our January course, so book yourself on it or give a place as a gift perhaps: Research and Production for Wildlife Documentaries

Job Jealousy: Elizabeth White - Filmmaker BBC Natural History Unit By Into The Wild

Into The Wild loves to speak to people with inspiring and envy-inducing jobs linked to wildlife or travel. As a filmmaker for the BBC Natural History Unit, Elizabeth White certainly fits the bill. Having worked on the incredible Frozen Planet, we thought it would be nice to speak to her and ask her all about it...

When did you first become interested in animals and photography?

I have always been interested in animals - I was an avid rock-pooler as a kid and loved summers holidays for it!  I did a lot of art growing up and studied art at A-level. I remember having a 'happy snap' camera in my teens, but my first proper camera was a 21st birthday present. I signed up to a City & Guilds course at the same time and never looked back - I really love the way a picture can tell a story, capture a moment or bring back memories in an instant.

How did this lead you to the BBC?

I studied zoology at Bristol University and joined the SCUBA diving club where I first learned to dive. Friends in the club new people who worked for the BBC Natural History Unit...

Please support PROJECT WILD THING

Project Wild Thing is a cinema documentary about nature, evolution and the future of childhood.

What will happen if we raise a generation of children completely out of touch with nature? Filmmaker David Bond thinks Mother Nature needs a helping hand. His children are fascinated by screens but are strangers to the natural world. Childhood is different to when he grew up - so many distractions compete for children’s time and attention. David appoints himself the Marketing Director for Nature and, with the help of marketing experts, he sets out to convince apathetic consumers, and his family, of the benefits of this amazing, free, wonder product. His journey takes him across the world as he attempts to untangle the complex web of agendas, fears, policies and habits that disconnect him and his family from the natural environment. Project Wild Thing finds hilarity, joy and absurdity in the choices we face as 21st Century humans. What happens when we forget we are natural animals? Project Wild Thing is an ambitious, feature-length, stunt documentary for international theatrical, TV, film festivals and public screenings. The film has an international appeal, and will inspire viewers to rethink their own relationship with the natural environment. www.projectwildthing.com @wearewildthing Facebook

BBC Calls out For Wildlife Gardeners

Is your garden teeming with wildlife? Have you actively encouraged birds, bees, bats and bugs to call your back-yard their home? Have you and your neighbours got together to create a hedgehog highway? Have you bought the local garden centre out of bird boxes? Or welcomed in reptiles with corrugated iron sheets? Could you share the secrets of how you made your family garden a sanctuary for Britain’s favourite wildlife? If you are as passionate about supporting all creatures great and small as we are, then the makers of a new programme for the BBC wants to hear from you! Froglife is helping Outline Productions spread the word about a new landmark series they are making for BBC ONE about the perilous state of Britain’s wildlife and what we can all do to help. Whether you have a small city garden, a big country one, a farm or a high-rise balcony - there is so much that can be done to support the wildlife all around us. Our gardens are Britain’s most vital nature reserve and we want to find inspirational stories of families who have turned their small patch into wildlife friendly spaces. The idea is to find amazing wildilfe gardeners, so that the public can follow their lead and make their gardens wildlife friendly too. So if you’ve put in a pond, built a rockery, assembled a log pile or done anything whatsoever to discover the amazing wildlife living on your doorstep, your story could help inspire other British families to do the same. If you want to find out more and share your experiences, then please contact wildlife@outlineproductions.co.uk

NHNZ welcomes three producers to its production ranks

Three new producers join the NHNZ production team as the production house’s slate continues to grow.

NHNZ’s head of production Andrew Waterworth welcomed Robin Shingleton, Colette Beaudry and Lorne Townend to the company in October, and says it’s great to have a flush of new talent joining the production team.

“NHNZ has a lot of production on the go, including the on-going series I Survived… for A&E Networks’ Bio Channel, another round of Built for the Kill for National Geographic Wild and two series for TVNZ, so we’re building up our talent pool for any new productions greenlit. It’s great to be able to bring people from all over the world to work with us on our growing range of productions.”

Lorne Townend recently moved to New Zealand from the UK to produce Life Force II – a blue chip science/natural history series in co-production with NHK, Science Channel, Discovery International and Arte. Lorne’s directing credits include the series How the Universe Works for Discovery US, Animals In the Womb: Dogs for Channel 4 & National Geographic and the long running Naked Science series, also for National Geographic. He most recently worked on Mankind: The Story of All of Us, a 12-part series for History Channel.

Robin Shingleton, who just completed post-producing Abalone Wars for Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific - a three-part series on the death-defying divers who face Great White Sharks and hostile waters to harvest green and black abalone gold, goes on to series produce Wild About NZ for TVNZ. Robin has a raft of New Zealand credits to his name including Earthquake; A Shocking Reminder for Prime TV, and The Truth About Us and The Missing Link for TVNZ.

Colette Beaudry has arrived from Sydney, Australia to series produce OceaNZ – a six-part series for TVNZ, funded by the NZ on Air Platinum Fund. NHNZ and BHP scoop eight nominations at 2012 Asian Television Awards

Sister production companies NHNZ and BHP this week scooped eight nominations for the 2012 Asian Television Awards.

NHNZ’s Head of Production Andrew Waterworth said it was a real credit to both BHP and NHNZ’s production teams to have such a high number of nominations, across such a variety of programming.

“This collection of nominations shows the effect of the power of two with NHNZ and BHP working closely together to get more traction in the market and also sharing human resources. It’s a wonderful recognition of talent and hard work for all involved in the two sister companies.”

BHP’s Creative Director Donovan Chan says he was surprised, but elated to be nominated for so many awards.

“It’s a fantastic way to end the year. And a real pat on the back for all of us here at BHP who have worked so hard. We’ve doubled our production load over the last two years; it’s been full on, but this kind of credit makes it all worthwhile.”

BHP’s Taiwan Revealed: Cinema Formosa for Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific is nominated for Best Documentary Programme (One-off/Special) and Best Current Affairs Programme. Restaurant Bobby Chinn, also for Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, is nominated for Best Reality Show and directors David Grusovin & Quinn Berentson – both now working for NHNZ - are nominated for Best Direction, while Lonely Planet Six Degrees China - Shanghai for BBC Worldwide & CICC is nominated for Best Lifestyle Programme. BHP Senior Editor Dipin Verma is nominated for the Best Editing award for his work on Junkie Monastery for the Bio Channel, AETN, prior to joining BHP.

NHNZ received nominations for three shows, with Primeval New Zealand (in association with NHK, and produced for TVNZ with funding from NZ on Air) nominated in the Best Natural History or Wildlife Programme category and Jason Lindsay nominated for Best Editing for his work on Nat Geo Wild’s Built for the Kill: Lion.

NHNZ’s China office was also involved in CICC’s Long March Into Space production for DNA and Discovery, which has been nominated for Best Infotainment Programme.

Protect the planet that provides!

Every human life on Earth depends on a natural world capable of supporting our needs. But we are taking more from nature than it can replace, weakening the Earth’s ability to provide the clean air, fresh water and food we depend on. That is why CI is working at every level — from remote villages to the offices of presidents and CEOs — to help move whole societies toward a healthier, more sustainable development path that values and accounts for nature's role in our well-being.

Take the Pledge:

  • I recognize that I need nature.
  • I recognize that nature gives me the air I breathe, the food I eat, the water I drink and much, much more.
  • I recognize that without people like me who raise our voices to protect the planet, we’ll continue to take more from nature than nature can give.
  • I’m going to help turn the tide.
  • I pledge to protect the planet that provides.
  • And I pledge to spread this message to my friends, family and neighbors — so they, too, can understand and appreciate nature’s value.

Help WWF create an Arctic Home where polar bears and local communities can thrive

Right now, in dens throughout the Arctic, polar bear mothers are giving birth to a new generation of cubs. Birthing season in the Arctic usually spans the chilly months of November and December, but as polar bear families grow this winter, so does the threat to their unique and fragile environment. That's why Coca-Cola and WWF are teaming up again to help create a place where polar bears and local communities can thrive. Over the past five years Coca-Cola has supported WWF's Arctic research team as they study polar bears in their natural habitat, protecting the animals from unsustainable industrial activity and educating people about the largest threats to the polar bear's icy habitat. The team's important field work has led to a better understanding of the threats polar bear families face, the most serious of which is the rapidly melting arctic sea ice. The Arctic - which spans the United States, Canada, Denmark, Greenland, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, and Sweden – is extremely susceptible to climate change. Threats to the polar bears, and the entire Arctic region, will not go away on their own. That is why Coca-Cola is partnering with WWF to create a place that polar bears can call home. When completed, this new "Arctic Home" will be twice the size of Texas. Thanks for watching this video and helping to make the "Arctic Home" a reality.

Continue to help raise awareness and funds by sharing with your friends. If you want to go the extra mile and donate more, Coca-Cola will match up to $1,000,000 in total donations made through February 15, 2013.

ATE team rescue a baby elephant from a well...

We rescued this young eight months old calf early this week. Luckily the report came in early in the morning and we were able to get there quick before the mother was forced to leave by herders arriving to water their cattle. It was a happy ending as we were able to reunite the calf with her mother, Zombe.

And a feel good Whale Shark Rescue! :)

November 7, 2012, diving aboard the Solmar V (www.solmarv.com) at Roca Partida, near Socorro Island, about 250 miles south of Baja, Mexico. During the first dive of the morning, we came upon a mature whale shark in some amount of distress due to a large rope cinched around it's girth. It must have been there for some time, as the rope was encrusted with barnacles, and was cutting deeply into the flesh of the shark. On the second dive of the morning, we located the same whale shark once again, and with Eddy (dive guest) on the scene with his "Go Pro" camera, we were able to memorialize the rescue. In the video you will see Dave (dive guide) approach the shark from the front, and Dani (dive guide) swim to the shark from above. You will see Dani successfully cut the rope loose, freeing the shark which slowly swims away. At the end, you will see Eddy's wife, Gina, knuckle-bump Dani, as we all celebrate together. We brought the rope back to the boat, and found it was about 2 inches in diameter, so perhaps an anchor or mooring line? How it got wrapped around the shark is a mystery...

MERRY XMAS!!
